A state assassin seeks revenge for the murder of his lover as he pursues his own transcendence. This is the story of a flawed man who sought to do good by unknowingly doing evil adnd who comes to recognize that the only human salvation is in love. He operates in a sub-culture which cynically abuses power and people and where the ends justify the means.

The events are framed by Zed, the protagonist, waiting for a final confrontation. Zed is a highly trained British covert agent assigned to assassinate a decorated British army officer. It is suspected that the officer, accused of war crimes at the Hague International War Crimes Court, may compromise the government over a military blunder.
